Propane as a fireplace fuel: the trade-offs
Advantages of propane as a fireplace fuel

- Works in homes with no natural gas service
- Instant on and off, often with a remote or wall switch
- No ash, no creosote and no wood to haul
- Millivolt-ignition units can run during a power outage
Disadvantages of propane as a fireplace fuel
- Heat depends on the tank level and on timely deliveries
- The appliance must be configured for propane, so a natural gas unit can't simply be hooked up
- Propane is heavier than air, so leaks settle low instead of rising
- Running costs follow your propane supplier's pricing
Our efficient fireplace guide explains how burner setup affects how much heat you get from each delivery.
What happens during the visit
Blocked or damaged venting can push exhaust into the room. Logs set in the wrong place cause soot and incomplete burning.
Diagnose
Why it won't light, stays lit poorly or soots.
Clean and adjust
Burner, pilot, logs and glass.
Inspect the vent
From the appliance to the outside cap.
Confirm
A test run before you use it.
If you smell gas
Leave the home right away, don't use switches or phones inside, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
Getting ready for the visit
- Find the model number, usually on a plate under the lower grille.
- Turn the unit off and let it cool.
- Have the remote or wall switch working.
- Note what happens when you try to light it.
When to book propane fireplace repair
- The pilot won't light or keeps going out
- Soot on the glass or logs
- Glass that is cloudy, cracked or loose
- Yellow, lazy or uneven flames
- A gas smell (leave and call the utility first)
Checked on every visit
- Controls and remote
- Vent and termination cap
- Log placement
- Pilot assembly and flame
- Glass and gasket seal
Common propane fireplace repairs
| Symptom | Likely causes |
|---|---|
| Pilot won't stay lit | Weak thermocouple or thermopile, dirty pilot assembly |
| Pilot lights, burner doesn't | Low thermopile output, switch or wiring fault, gas valve |
| Soot on glass or logs | Logs out of place, air shutter setting, wrong orifice |
| Tall, lazy yellow flames | Air mixture or orifice problem |
| Flame fades as tank runs low | Low tank pressure, a matter for your supplier |
We repair burners, pilots, valves and ignition parts. We also offer gas fireplace service and maintenance, and gas line installation when a new run is needed. Tank and fuel delivery issues belong with your propane supplier. Our guide to fireplace Anatomy shows where each part sits.
If you smell gas
Don't touch switches or try to light anything. Leave the house, then call your propane supplier or emergency services from outside. Read fireplace safety for more.
Propane fireplace dealer or repair service?
A propane fireplace dealer sells units. When yours stops working, what you need is a diagnosis and a repair. We service propane fireplaces no matter where they were bought. When replacing makes more sense, we handle gas fireplace installation and gas log installation. Some owners would rather drop fuel deliveries altogether, and our electric fireplace installation page covers that route.
