What fireplace renovation services cover behind marble
Marble surrounds and mantels in older homes are often in better shape than the fireplace they frame. Our fireplace renovation work focuses on the working part: the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, doors and fuel source. We aren't stone fabricators. Our goal is to renovate the fireplace while disturbing the marble as little as possible, and to tell you up front if any step would put the stone at risk.

- Firebox repair for cracked brick, open joints and worn firebrick
- Smoke chamber and damper repair so the fireplace drafts well and closes properly
- Fireplace draft repair when smoke has been staining the face of the marble
- Fireplace door installation sized to an older, sometimes irregular opening
- Fireplace insert installation or fireplace conversion to gas
- Refractory panel replacement for factory-built units dressed in marble
Soot on the marble is a clue
Dark staining along the top edge of a marble surround usually means smoke has been spilling out of the opening. Cleaning the stone without fixing the draft only buys time. Our guide to common chimney issues explains the usual causes.
Matching the renovation to your fireplace's style
Not every classic marble fireplace renovation is about preserving the past. Some homeowners want the original character back, while others want the marble to anchor a much cleaner room. The fireplace work changes with each direction.
Charming antique fireplace renovation services
Antique fireplaces were often built for coal or small wood fires. They tend to have shallow fireboxes, cast-iron fronts or summer covers, and dampers that rusted long ago. Renovation here usually means restoration. That includes repairing the firebox, freeing or repairing the damper, and keeping original metalwork where it's still sound.
Cottage style fireplace renovation
Cottage rooms suit a smaller, simpler fireplace: painted brick or a plain marble slip, a wood mantel, and a fire you actually use. A wood-burning insert can make a small firebox far more useful for heat. A well-fitted set of doors keeps the look tidy when the fire is out. For heating tips, see our guide to an efficient fireplace.
Modern fireplace renovation
A modern renovation often pairs a classic marble surround with gas: a clean log set or insert, slim-framed glass doors, and no ash to manage. If you're starting from a blank wall rather than an existing marble fireplace, custom fireplace design or a custom masonry fireplace design may be a better starting point.
What happens during the visit
A damaged smoke chamber is a common cause of smoke spilling into the room. Cracks in the firebox let heat reach the framing behind it.

If smoke comes into the room
Stop adding fuel, open a window and don't relight the fire until the chimney has been checked. If the smoke is heavy, an alarm sounds or you suspect a chimney fire, get everyone outside and call 911.

- Note the make and model of any insert, stove or gas unit if you have it.
