Warning signs that call for a fireplace repair
Wood-burning and gas fireplaces show trouble differently, so it helps to know what to watch for with the type you have. Any one of these signs is a reason to stop and have a closer look.

Wood-burning fireplaces
Signs to watch for
- Smoke spills out of the opening instead of rising up the flue
- The damper grinds, sticks or won't seal when closed
- Mortar or brick crumbs collect on the hearth
- Hairline or open cracks appear in the firebox walls or refractory panels
- A strong campfire smell lingers in the room days after a fire
Gas and electric fireplaces
Signs to watch for
- The pilot won't light or goes out shortly after lighting
- Ignition clicks repeatedly with no flame
- Flames look uneven or lazy, or the glass turns dark quickly
- An electric unit flickers, trips or won't respond to its controls
If you smell gas
Don't try to relight the fireplace or flip switches. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Have the fireplace repaired only once it has been made safe.
How the visit works
A damaged smoke chamber is a common cause of smoke spilling into the room. Worn gaskets and glass on inserts and gas units waste heat and can leak exhaust.

Signs it's time for fireplace repair
- Doors or glass that are cracked or don't seal
- Smoke coming into the room
- A fireplace that is hard to light or won't stay lit
- Cracked or missing firebrick or refractory panels
- A damper that won't open or close
What we look at
- Doors, glass and gaskets
- Smoke chamber and smoke shelf
- Mortar joints inside the firebox
- Hearth and surround
- Draft from the opening
How to prepare
- Keep pets in another room while the work area is open.
- Clear a few feet of space in front of the hearth or appliance.
- Make sure the technician can reach the roof or attic access if it's needed.
- Move rugs, photos and anything fragile away from the work area.
Why it pays to schedule before you need the fireplace
Repairs are easiest to arrange when the fireplace isn't in daily use. Mortar and refractory work need a cold firebox, and gas parts sometimes have to be ordered. Booking in spring or summer means the work is done before the first fire, not squeezed in during the season when everyone else is calling. If a problem shows up mid-winter, we still take emergency calls 24 hours a day, Sunday through Friday, and same-day service is possible when the schedule allows.
